Asbestos Training Services

I can present training courses under my own auspices that do not count toward EPA accreditation or state licensing. I can give lectures in these “AHERA” courses if they are sponsored by an approved training provider. The courses that I give under my own auspices include Asbestos Awareness and Operations and Maintenance, and I present courses on the ASTM asbestos standards as discussed below.
Asbestos Awareness – My two-hour course meets the EPA and OSHA requirements for people who work around and may even contact, but not disturb, asbestos-containing materials. I have trained all of the employees of an electric utility and a major hotel property, for example. I use two Powerpoint programs: Asbestos Awareness: Living with a Rattlesnake and Asbestos Awareness: Don’t Wake a Sleeping Bear, which I created, produce and distribute. The analogies between these dangerous animals and asbestos is simple: know what they look like, know where they are, know the harm they can cause – and leave them alone.

Operations and Maintenance – An Asbestos Awareness lecture opens my O&M course, whether it is a four-hour session on a specific work practice and material, a two-day course covering several work practices and materials, or something in between. A “hands-on exercise” using simulated asbestos materials is part of every O&M course.

Negative Exposure Assessments – The August 2006 changes to the OSHA respirator standard place new emphasis on the use of Negative Exposure Assessments for asbestos. I can provide training on the use of NEAs including the testing and air sampling required to certify that a NEA applies to a specific job.

ASTM Standards for Asbestos Control – I have been presenting this course since 1994 and it now covers all three standards for which I am responsible:
• E2356 Standard Practice for Comprehensive Building Asbestos Surveys
• E1368 Standard Practice for Visual Inspection of Asbestos Abatement Projects and
• E2394 Standard Practice for Maintenance, Renovation and Repair of Installed Asbestos Cement Products. The course includes class workshops as well as my lectures.
